紀伊國屋書店 or Kinokuniya is a bookstore from Japan. The name “Kinokuniya” can be literally translated as “a shop in the land of Ki” (Shinjuku), where it was first opened in 1927 by Mr. Moichi Tanabe. Many years later, Kinokuniya has evolved and expanded its business not only in Japan but also overseas.
Kinokuniya entered the South East Asian market for the first time in the 1980s, opening a store in Singapore, and entered the Indonesian retail scene by opening a store in Plaza Indonesia shopping mall in 1990. Kinokuniya’s second store in Indonesia was opened in 1998, in Plaza Senayan, and in 2003, the Senayan store was relocated from the 3rd floor to the 5th floor in Sogo Department Store. It was revamped and expanded to 1,850 square meter, and now provides the best range of import books and magazines in Jakarta.
After the new look of Kinokuniya Plaza Senayan, now dubbed “The Jakarta Store”, two more stores opened in Jakarta. In 2005, a store of approximately 500 sqm was opened in Pondok Indah Mall-2 and in 2007, another one in Grand Indonesia.
Now with three new stores in Indonesia located strategically in the best malls of Jakarta, on April 2010, Kinokuniya Indonesia has decided to close its pioneer store in Plaza Indonesia after 20 years of operations. While the closing of its first ever store in Indonesia is sad, Kinokuniya Indonesia still retains a strong position in the midst of import bookstore retail competition and strves to maintain its excellent service, providing the best titles and entertainment for all book lovers and enthusiasts in Indonesia.
