Last Days of Kino PI: Clearance Sale Day 2

Posted in kinokuniya indonesia stories, store by kinokuniyajkt on April 28, 2010

Before we start we’d like to thank everyone for reading our report of the first day of clearance sale. We intended the report to be something offbeat, to entertain our followers on the web and to keep everyone up to date with what’s happening during the sale because of the superb enthusiasm of the customers, but as we wrote it, it somehow became a kind of memoir. And we thought, hey, let’s just make a series of it. So, in a way, with these reports, we are literally creating the last chapter of Kino PI.

That, and we have plenty of blog space which we haven’t used.

Anyway, Our fourth last day of Kinokuniya PI ended on a contrasting note. We were saddened that the store only had four more operational days to go. But we are also happy that the books are, once again, running low. The reason for our sadness is obvious but some might think it weird that we could be happy that stocks are low. It’s not that we’re happy to see empty shelves, but we’re just happy that customers – you – are shopping there!

Despite this, our merchandisers still had to work hard refilling the stocks. The one in charge of Literature was particularly baffled that she still had to send more refills. At some point of the day, while some of us were on duty putting 10,000 and 20,000 price tags on super duper bargain books and so forth on location in Kino PI, she was on the phone with her boss, her mates and her staff, listening to reports of how her books in particular were highly sought after. “What?” she was overheard saying to someone on the phone, “What do you mean the fictions are gone? I just sent refills!” Apparently, the person on the other line said, “Not enough!” And so she scurried to the selling floor in our flagship store to collect more bargain books to send… when we returned to Plaza Senayan, we went to her and said, “You know, three customers actually came knocking on the stock room door, asking ‘Will more fiction books come tomorrow?’” Frankly, she didn’t know whether to be overwhelmed or happy!

Meanwhile, the person in charge of Design & Lifestyle, managed to take some pictures with his BlackBerry of the foot traffic in the store.

Ah, what pleasing images… we do so love a crowded store!

There were very few incidents on the second day, and we heard some positive reports from our Tweetfolk over at good ol’ Twitter.

Amelia Yunirman said:

Lumayan dapet 2 novel 40ribu di @kinokuniya_jkt PI sering2 aja clearance :p

In response to that all we can say is that, well, if clearance were to be held everyday, you won’t see Kinokuniya around anymore! Clearance sale for store closing, especially, should never be done on a monthly basis – not even on a biannual basis! Or should never ever be done! Ever. Because, really, we do not intend to close any more stores. So, folks, do enjoy it while it lasts.

Meanwhile, Nadia Irwansyah comments:

Senangnya abis dr @kinokuniya_jkt PI…tp sayang buku Dora cuman ada satu, kira2 bsk buku Doranya ada lg gak ya?Ankku ngefans ama Dora nich!
1:39 AM Apr 27th via UberTwitter

For everyone’s information, Dora books are still available in other Kinokuniya stores. If you want to order, send an email to customer_service@kinokuniya.co.id or call to one of our stores. The information can be found in this blog (see Contact Information). Visit us, yes? (And that was our shameless plugging of the day. Don’t worry – we only get a quota of one shameless plugging of one day.)

Luckily, we are still very much shameless about posting your Tweets. Yesterday, we found The Most Amusing Tweet Of The Day. Vitri Maulana apparently was undecided, as she wrote:

Voice inside of me is telling me to check out the sale over at @kinokuniya_jkt PI. Wonder if the voice is going to last.
2:29 AM Apr 27th via SocialScope in reply to kinokuniya_jkt

Interesting, because we have voices inside us too that is always telling us to KEEP RESTOCKING SO PEOPLE CAN STILL ENJOY THE DISCOUNT. And yes, this voice of ours does so in CAPSLOCK, as if to emphasize the point to us! But we digress. For Vitri’s sake, we hope her voice does not go capslocky on her and we hope her voice manages to convince her to go to Kino PI. Not only that going later might risk her the loss of potentially good tomes to another shopper, but we also just want more people to come.

(Was that another shameless plugging? Oh, well, let’s just pretend that was not.)

So, there you have it folks. The summary of it is: sale continues to be a success. More books are being sold. And no matter how fast or how many we refill, the stock is still dwindling. So, if you plan to hunt for some books, do not wait until it’s too late.

And much like the stock, Kino PI’s time to open is also dwindling. Fast. Is it impossible to ask for more time, for more than 24 hours in a day, so we can savor and enjoy the last days of the store in a relatively comfortable way instead of in hectic frenzy? The clicking of the clock hands say no.

Last Days of Kino PI: Clearance Sale Day 1

Posted in kinokuniya indonesia stories, store by kinokuniyajkt on April 27, 2010

It is indeed a bittersweet finish for our pioneer store in Indonesia, Kinokuniya Plaza Indonesia.

Since the moment we found out that the store will be closed, we have braced ourselves to face the end. On one hand, we remain confident and strong about our chances in succeeding in the bookstore retail raise because we can now shift our focus entirely to maintain the performance of our mammoth-sized flagship store in Plaza Senayan, the Kinokuniya Jakarta store, and the development of our branches in Pondok Indah Mall-2 and its successor in Grand Indonesia. On the other, it is simply a sad day for us that we have to lose the store that started it all for us. Alas, this is a fact of life (and of business…)

So for weeks we have begun to prepare for the closing of the store. We started to categorize the books and shift our stocks around – which goes where, which stays, which gets special price, which gets discounted… then there were the meetings to organize the logistics of the sale. These are all technical issues that, had we even have the time to write them, would bore you to death. All you need to know is that everything finally came through in the end and yesterday, Monday, 26 April 2010, the beginning of the end finally began.

Our sale started from the moment the store opened at 10 AM. Those of us who were sitting on our (relatively) comfortable chairs in Kinokuniya Jakarta Store waited patiently for news from our brothers and sisters in Kino PI. It was a quiet first hour for us, to be honest, and we didn’t do much in the way of keeping up with the sale. We were going about our usual business of ordering books, answering inquiries from customers, cleaning our shelves and reorganizing books and whatnot… Then, at 11 AM the calls started coming.

And what calls they were! “It’s a party out there!” (Or, as a disgruntled staff reported, “More like a riot, actually.”) Then: “The books are flying off the shelves! This is great!” and “Did you know there’s a long line at the cashier counter?” In short, all the reports were good and we marveled at the sheer enthusiasm of the shoppers and their massive purchases. Then we got ready for lunch… except that there was a phone call from one of the higher-ups who was there and said, “Please send more books. When we say the books are flying off the shelves, we really do mean FLY. Oh, and? Do hurry.” It was at that point we stopped marveling. We boggled instead. We boggled some more and then went to work.

Some of us went to the ‘scene of the crime’ (that is, if buying books is a criminal act – which, luckily, it is not) to directly scope the area and figure out the next course of action. Some others remained behind in the flagship store to start preparing for more books to be sent there (we just had a feeling…) True enough, further reports of the condition of the store prompted cries of, “Refill! Refill!” Luckily for us, by then, the books have been scanned and packed.

While waiting for the delivery vehicle to come and collect the refill, we surfed the web and checked out reactions for the sale. Most are positive, a few are negative… but of course it’s impossible to please everyone. We didn’t have time to get our knickers in a twist, though, because we read some highly entertaining things about the sale, such as Rio Rizky Aditya‘s observation on his Twitter:

Depan gue di @kinokuniya_jkt, udah diskon sampe 70% aja struknya masih 5,5 juta. Sinting nih orang. Mau buka perpustakaan kali ye.

Indeed! We were told that customers’ receipt ran a metre-long, making out like a bandit with the books, which is nothing short of amazing. Again, the enthusiasm of our customers are amazing and we are properly grateful for that.

Later that night, once the refill had been transported away, we found this article in Kompas.com about the store’s closing. It was only then did we remember that one of our ranks, Kino PI’s supervisor Frans Nugraha, had been interviewed by a Kompas reporter. It had been something of a surprise since we didn’t make contact with them at all. We guess they might have heard of our sale from this blog or Twitter or Facebook (behold – such is the power of social networking websites).

You can see it here. And here’s an excerpt:

Clearance sale

Nice tip there from Kompas.com, which we wholly endorse, especially because it’s true, after all…

So the first day concludes with a triumph for us. Nearly 3,000 copies of books sold. Shelves were nearly empty, but refill was on the way, if not already there. There was publicity from all around and everything proceeded smoothly. But at the end of the day, we are still reminded that the end is creeping near. One day done, one halfway done and three more to go. It is not long before we have to work the night shift on Friday, 30 May 2010, repacking the remaining stocks, disassembling the furniture and… saying goodbye to our beloved first store. Tick tock, tick tock. Time flies.

Kinokuniya Plaza Indonesia Closing

Posted in announcements, store by kinokuniyajkt on April 16, 2010

Dear Valued Customers,

This spring, it is with regret that the management of PT. Kinokunia Bukindo announces the closing of our pioneer store in Indonesia, Kinokuniya Plaza Indonesia Store, effective 1 May 2010.

On 1st March 1990, the store affectionately known as “Kino PI” opened its first page to write a story about trade, knowledge, culture, people and community. Twenty years later that story has reached a conclusion. The end is bittersweet for all of us, but with every ending, there is always a new beginning. We thank you for being a part of Kinokuniya Plaza Indonesia’s story – its legacy will live on forever in our hearts.

Despite this, you can still be part of our stories. We cordially extend an invitation to visit our other stores in Plaza Senayan, Pondok Indah Mall-2 and Grand Indonesia, so you can continue writing yourself into Kinokuniya enduring history.

Warm Regards,
Kinokuniya Bookstores of Indonesia
